LISSO Fall Picnic (and Book Drive!)

Hey everyone,

First of all, we would like to thank everyone who came out to last week's Trivia Night at Winchell's and helped us claim victory!! Yes, the LISSO team, "Those Darn Librarians," won first prize!! Good times were had by all.

Our next event is a Fall Picnic and Book Drive. It will be held this coming Saturday, September 18 at Woodland Park beginning around noon..

Got extra books stacking up? Need a break from school? Do you like food and games? Wanna help a good cause?

Come to Woodland Park on Saturday, September 18th around 12:00 and join LISSO in their Fall Picnic and first ever Book Drive for the International Book Project, a non-profit organization founded and located in Lexington, KY!

· All SLIS students, staff, and faculty - including friends, family, and significant others are welco...me to attend!

· LISSO will be providing some food, like hamburgers, hotdogs, and vegetarian options, but feel free to bring your favorite side dish, dessert, drinks, or game!

·Pay your $5 LISSO dues by the 18th and be entered into a drawing for a gift card from the UK Bookstore; we will draw a name at the picnic!

·Woodland Park is located at 601 E. High Street, Lexington, KY 40502, a short walk from campus.

Please bring books to donate for the International Book Project! Don’t have any books? Help out by donating funds that are imperative in helping with the shipping costs; even just $1 per book helps out! The most needed books are classic and contemporary literature, fact books (history, business, biographies, etc.), children’s literature and picture/story books, dictionaries, primary, secondary, and higher textbooks copyrighted after the year 2000, and books in Spanish and French. Please make sure books are in good condition (no broken bindings, excessive writing, missing or torn pages or covers).

Hope to see you next Saturday! Bring your appetite!

Trivia Night

LISSO will be attending Trivia Night at Winchell's (348 Southland Drive) this Thursday, September 9. Trivia starts at 8p and usually goes until around 10. *For this event; however, LISSO asks that you would please RSVP if you plan on coming out so can try to reserve room for everyone! For most of our events, we generally are able to make space for all who show up -- but since Winchell's Trivia is a very popular event and Winchell's is not a large place -- we would like make sure that we reserve enough space for everyone who comes out. You can RSVP by leaving a comment on this blog entry, on the Facebook event, by e-mailing the LISSO account (lissouk@gmail.com), or by letting any of the officers know you are planning to attend.

President - Chelsey Spencer
Vice President - David Broussard
Secretary - Sara Wood
Communications Officer - Lisa Raney
Treasurer - Leslie Kuhnen

And now for some updates ... theSLIS Student Banquet is tonight at 6pm! We hope to see you there dressed up in your finest.

Also, the LISSO End of Year Banquet is tomorrow, April 24th at Kirklevington Park from 2-4. We hope you can make it out, rain or shine. Alternate rain plans are in the mix, and we still intend to meet at the Park at 2 and go from there. Hope you can make it out.

In the works is a tentative last event of the semester, to tour the KUSI Storage Facility ("Book Caves") in Wilmore, KY on Wednesday, April 28. More information will be disseminated via this blog and UK e-mail with details as the trip is finalized.

April Meeting Minutes

April LISSO Meeting
21 April 2010
SLIS Lounge

Upcoming Events
-Picnic will be held Saturday, April 24th at Kirklevington Park. LISSO will provide burgers, hot dogs, vegetarian options, sodas, and condiments. Please bring side items, desserts, or games. We will meet at the park at 2:00, and if it rains, we will take the party elsewhere! Possibly to Anne's house or a restaurant.
-Trip to the Caves will be on Wednesday, April 28th. The tour is tentatively scheduled for 3:30 p.m. To carpool, meet at 2:45 p.m. with location and drivers TBD. People can also choose to meet the group at the Caves.
-We discussed opinions on events held this semester. Positives were varying schedule of events to accommodate more people and a nice mix of local, Lexington places were visited. Would like more variety in events; Chris suggested Art Gallery tours; David brought suggestion from fellow student for want of a night on the town. Discussed events during the summer, such as Fourth of July festival, that Lexington holds if LISSO is interested. Other events mentioned were Thriller Festival in the fall, Legends games.
-Chris suggested LISSO put on an orientation in the fall to show building, campus, and get the word out about LISSO. To do so, we will need email list for new students in the summer and fall. Chris will also "be around" Lexington as a contact for new LISSO officers if they have questions.

April

Hi everyone,

First of all, we hope you're enjoying the spring weather as this semester comes to a close. It's been simply gorgeous outside.

Now, for some reminders. Tonight, LISSO will be hosting its final Friday at Five of the semester is today, April 16th at Charlie Brown's which is located at 816 E. Euclid between Ashland and E. High St.

Charlie Brown's is a cozy little bar/restaurant with a very unique vibe. It's been described as akin to a "library in someone's basement." And the free jukebox plays nothing but hits from the 50s and 60s. So come out and have a drink, sandwich, or just to socialize. All SLIS students, staff, and faculty are welcome!

We also will be having our last meeting of the semester this coming Wednesday, April 21 at 5pm in the SLIS Student Lounge. We will be discussing year end events, past events, the transferring of LISSO leadership for the 2010-11 school year, and various odds and ends.

We hope you can make it out!

March Activities and Reminders

Hi everyone,

We wanted to thank everyone who came out to LISSO's first ever Hap"pie" Hour this week. Good times and delicious pie were had by all! This is an event we're definitely keeping in mind as one to repeat later on in the semester.

As for upcoming events...

Spring Comps Orientation will be held at 5 o'clock today for those who are taking comps in a few weeks. Professor Carrigan will be going over tips and advice, as well as providing students with his extensive management knowledge. It will once again be taped, courtesy of Will Buntin, and posted to Blackboard for those who are unable to attend.

LISSO's March meeting will be held this Wednesday, the 10th in the SLIS Student Lounge from 5 to 6. We have some ideas in mind, but would love if you came out and helped us plan for the remainder of the semester and chat with fellow SLIS students!!

The following day Thursday, March 11 is LISSO's Resume Workshop from 11:30 to 1:00pm. This will also be held in the SLIS Student Lounge. We will be having librarians providing information about resumes and cover letters. They will also provide feedback on students' resumes and/or cover letters.

In other news,

We are also seeking nominees for the LISSO Leadership Award. Each year the students vote on the recipient for the LISSO leadership. We will have a school wide vote at the end of March. Students who graduated in December and will graduate in May are eligible for the award. We will send a list of the students out shortly with a call for nominations.

LISSO would like to remind you that we have an ongoing Dues drive. Dues are $5 and paid once a year. They can be given to any of the LISSO officers (Liz Siler, Anne Bradley, Chris Worland, Sara Wood, or Lisa Raney). We will be having a drawing at the end-of-the-semester picnic for all who have paid their dues this semester, and the winner will win a gift certificate to the UK Bookstore.

In closing..

As always, we are always open to any comments, complaints, criticism, suggestions, etc. You can leave a comment here, send us an e-mail to lissouk@gmail.com, or contact any of the LISSO officers.

Thank you!

LISSO as of 2010

LISSO held its first meeting of the Spring 2010 semester on Wednesday, January 20. Thank you to all who came.

It had been known that LISSO President Amanda Hazenfield would be graduating at the end of the Fall 2009 semester and as a result, LISSO Secretary Liz Siler graciously stepped up at the December meeting and volunteered to serve as LISSO President through the end of the 2009/10 school year. At the January meeting, SLIS student Sara Wood volunteered to fill the role of the then-vacant Secretary position.

LISSO is still currently searching for current SLIS students interested in joining the organization as current members will soon be graduating.

Some future events for the Spring 2010 semester include resume workshop, comps orientation, a trip to the Keeneland Library and/or race, spring picnic, more Fridays at five and Trivia nights, etc. We are always open to suggestions.

---

LISSO kicked off the semester with two notable events: our first Friday at Five at Lynagh's on January 29th and a Trivia night at Winchell's on February 4. Though the LISSO team did not ultimately manage to take first place at trivia, they reigned supreme through the majority of the game.

The next official LISSO event is another Friday at Five at the Mellow Mushroom on February 12. Our next LISSO meeting is February 17. Upcoming meetings are planned for these Wednesdays at 5p in the SLIS Student Lounge: March 10, and April 21.

Other LISSO and SLIS events are added to the calendar at the bottom of this blog. Please comment or drop us a line at our LISSO e-mail which is lissouk@gmail.com or contact any of the officers individually if you would like to see any more added or if you have any comments, suggestions, etc. We also have a Facebook account which is another great way of contacting and keeping up with all of the fun stuff we do.

Until next time,
