January LISSO Meeting

We have another change of plan and venue for the LISSO meeting in January. Those of you heavily involved in the planning process will recall that our Constitution was on the to-do list. Due to the break from classes we have decided to have a special meeting on Monday January 7th at the Good Foods Co-op on Southland Dr. at 4:45. The only item on the agenda will be the constitution so bring along your copies for edits. The plan is to arrive between 4:30 and 5 to get food as a working supper meeting so we can begin work by 5:00.

Our regular meeting for the month will be replaced by a joint ALA meeting later in the month. Stay tuned for upcoming details regarding this joint ALA/LISSO collaboration.
Have a great break everyone!

Free Books in the CAIT Lab!

Need some classic SLIS reading material while away on your break?
Before everyone heads home, try to stop by the CAIT lab to take a look at their large shelf of free books. When you enter the lab walk to the back and head into the first alcove. Once inside, look to the right where Mary Landrum has placed a large sign labeling the free selections.

As the CAIT Lab prepares for their move to LCLI, more books may be made available, so keep your eyes on the free shelves throughout the spring semester and thanks to Mary for arranging the free area for everyone!

LISSO November Social Outing

Hey SLIS'ers!

It's that time of the month again - what everyone looks forward to - LISSO Social Outing!

Last month we had talked about possibly going bowling. We even made some reservations at Southland Bowling Lanes. However, if you've watched the news in the past month, you know that sadly, Southland Bowling Lanes caught fire, thus ending our's - and the rest of Lexvegas' - Friday evening plans!!!

Alas, another great, FREE event came to the rescue. This month marks the reappearance of the beloved Gallery Hop in downtown Lexington. If you've never been to one, now is your time! Free art, free wine (if you get to the venues early), and - if we visit a lot of galleries - free exercise! Not to mention hanging out with only the coolest grad students UK has to offer!

Also, what a great way to de-stress from comps!?!

Here's the details:

WHAT: LISSO SOCIAL OUTING - GALLERY HOP
WHEN: FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 5PM - ???
WHERE:
MEET AT:
LEXINGTON PUBLIC LIBRARY
CENTRAL BRANCH GALLERY
(1ST Floor - to the right of LPL entrance)
PRICE: FREE (w/exception of personal drinks later on in the evening)

We will meet at LPL as a starting point, from 5:00-5:30, to collect maps of the other venues in town. We will also at this point decide where to go for food and drinks. As last time, LISSO will provide a few appetizers. We were planning on meeting first at Annabelle's, but it closed too! However, the town will be "hoppin'", so I'm sure we will have no trouble finding somewhere to go.

In the mean time, have a great week, good luck to those taking comps, and hope to see everyone on Friday!

LISSO Secretary

Comps Orientation Video Access

The presentation given by Dr. Sineath on the 29th was taped and made accessible via two means: DVD and downloaded video in the CAIT lab. Unfortunately, contrary to several attempts, the sound quality was not sufficient for compressed video blog posting.
Here are your viewing options:
  • 3 DVD copies are available for check-out in the CAIT lab (located in the Comps Study Materials black box). There is a sign-out and return sheet (by the door) that is handled via the honor system - so be nice and return your viewed copy promptly.
  • 2 computers in the CAIT lab have the original raw version downloaded to the desktop. The two computers selected (L2 and L8) have speakers attached but for personal viewing, feel free to bring along some ear phones.
  • For those of you in Cincy or Louisville and you ABSOLUTELY CANNOT get to the CAIT before comps, e-mail me off-list and LISSO will send you a DVD copy of the orientation with the understanding that you deposit the DVD copy sent to you back into the CAIT lab on the morning of the exam so the DVDs may be used for next semester.

One note about the video: due to background air equipment, the sound will need to be relatively high and one question about illness was left out of the taping. Answer: If you are ill and cannot make the test, you must wait until the next semester to re-schedule; no make-up exams are given.

LISSO sends a big thanks to Krista, Jennifer and Sara for bringing snacks and another big thank you to Jennifer Mattern for arranging our Niles Gallery location and exploring video options.

Halloween Party!! October 27th @ 7:00PM

Dig out those costumes, and go shopping for some good eats, 'cause THE LISSO bash of the year takes place on Saturday October 27th @ 7:00PM. Location: Dr. Sineath's humble abode (3418 Bay Leaf Dr., Lexington). Drinks are graciously provided by the Sineaths which leaves food to be supplied by attendees - just bring along yourself in a costume and your favorite party food. Oh, and try to be a little creative with the food - we can only eat so many chips and dip ;-) Trust me, this is one party you DO NOT want to miss while you're in the SLIS program - pics from last year's party are listed as a link on the side. As always, significant others and alumni are welcome.

See you there!!

Have a Ball at Buddy's!

For those who missed the wine tasting, now's your chance to network, relax, and just have fun with fellow LIS-ers outside of class. For those who came--we'd love to see you again!

Join us Friday, September 28 at 5 p.m. for our first (or second, depending on how you look at it) "official" LISSO activity of the term at Buddy's Bar and Grill.

LISSO will be buying some appetizers to share all 'round, so come ready to munch! We'd love to be able to pay for it all, but cost of drinks and all other food will be up to the individual. The agenda for the evening is as follows:

  • 5-5:30 Gather at the bar for drinks

  • 5:30 Seating for dinner

  • 5:30 'til everyone leaves: Food, drinks, socialize, and relax with fellow bibliophiles!

Hope to see you there!

Welcome Back Wine Tasting Report

Meet Bacchus, our newest honorary LISSO member.....well maybe only for one day.

August 18th, was our Welcome Back Wine Tasting at Equus Run Vineyards....and besides meeting Bacchus in person, several other personality legends attended to kick off the new school year.

The wine and weather were sublime and the setting was beautiful.....the grapes were just ready to be harvested which filled the air with a special sweetness, just for us.....thanks to all who made it out! Lots of new faces and some veterans to welcome them! Here's a sampling of some of the fun!

The main barn for curing the wine,

While some students chose to enjoy the atmosphere of the tasting room, others escaped outside to the patio
and enjoyed a more private tasting session supplied by our gracious host.

Last stop before heading home.....a tour of the grounds and facilities...with full glass of course.
Thanks for coming and perhaps we can make this a new summer habit!
Cheri

Here's a suggestion from one of our readers....
- Thanks Heather!

Cheri,
A fellow I know at the Louisville Free Public Library produces an interesting talk-show style podcast about current library issues. It's a call in show that's open to anyone. Here's the link to the show's blog which includes instructions on joining the conversation as well as how to stream or subscribe to the podcast. http://uncontrolledvocabulary.blogspot.com/
Thanks,Heather Fox
PS- The LISSO blog looks great!

Welcome to the new LISSO Info Blog @ UK!

Welcome to the first University of Kentucky SLIS' LISSO Info Blog! (Wow, way too many acronyms for one sentence!)

In an effort to keep the LISSO members and SLIS students up to date on upcoming events and to make links and photos of events more accessible, LISSO has decided to create an info blog! Our purpose is to be more informational rather than opinionated....unlike the traditional blog, this site will not be a sounding off platform but rather an interactive place to keep the communication flowing!

Let me start by giving you an idea of how this blog will work. As of right now, the only ones who will be able to post on this blog are the officers who will sign each post to identify themselves. Other LISSO members who may want to add to the fun can e-mail us their question or comments and we will post for you if it is deemed appropriate by the LISSO board...we want to stay helpful and informative, not controversial. I know among the Library crowd "censorship" is a hard sell, but in the nature of trying to keep the board uncluttered and helpful, we must draw the line somewhere. We welcome feedback (good or bad) as this process gets off the ground.

Oops! I'm already having trouble with the "brief" aspect....baby steps...

Cheri, your LISSO President

P.S. Thanks to Kim McCoy and Erin Pifer for their LIS 647 presentations on blogs - you have a new convert!
